Home Kong Kitchen
With most of our planned summer projects postponed, Mental Ideas has been on a roll and making serious dough! Thanks to the team effort of volunteer bakers Ying, Moira, Emma, Raquel, Chrizaline, Michelle, Mercy, Amy and Sadie, we’ve spent much of the summer turning our kitchens into mini-Hiroshimas and making weekly food drives to support Hong Kong NGO Breadline!
The charity relies on food waste from cafes and restaurants to deliver bread to the homeless and other vulnerable groups living below the breadline on the streets or in shelters. But with shops and restaurants operating restricted hours at low capacity, Breadline and other food waste charities have been struggling to meet demand at a time when it has never been higher. So after reading about their struggles in the HKFP, we decided to bake our own and donate it to the charity.
A couple of weeks ago we donated to a shelter for Kenyan women migrants and refugees (pictured) after learning bread is part of their essential diet! ❤️ Last week we donated to a refuge shelter for abused domestic helpers awaiting trial. ❤️ We were also able to donate shop bought loaves to Feeding Hong Kong! ❤️
Join our Baker’s Dirty Half Dozen!
If you live in Hong Kong and fancy a crack at baking bread yourself, we’d LOVE for you to join us! We’re all amateurs (though a few of us are fast becoming experts!) We bake/ drop off Thursdays and deliver Fridays. Click on the link below to learn more about the charity’s inspiring work and the different ways you and your community can contribute! Big love & gratitude to the inspirational Daisy Tam Diers, founder of Breadline, and Foodworks HK for enthusiastically supporting our fledgling Home Kong Kitchen initiative!
Art & Soul Food
We are now collaborating with local artists to create sustainable bread boxes out of recycled waste with doodled designs and messages of solidarity for our homeless friends. If you’re an artist and would like to send us your sketches and messages, please email sadie@mentalideas.org.
We are also exploring the possibility of setting up our own online bakery where you can order our breads, muffins and other goodies and we deliver to your homes. We can’t promise it will be the best you’ve ever tasted, but we CAN promise every cent we make is donated to the homeless. Watch this mental space…!
